Miguel and I regularly bumped into each other either at the Polo 50-meter pool or in the steam room. He took this race seriously and trained religously. We discussed the race often and exchanged notes on our preparation.

He had a great sense of humor. When i asked him for the first time what he does to prepare for the race, his response was "secret". We also teased each other that we should watch each other's elbows during the race and that i might just grab on to his ankles if i got tired during the race.

I think i was one of the last guys he spoke to. 20 Minutes before the race, he mentioned that he had to cut his Hong Kong trip short to make sure his team would not be disqualified. He mentioned that he sent several text messages to Fred Uytengsu to request him to make sure his team was not disqualified. He also said that he attended a function sponsored by JP Morgan in Hong Kong.

I have no doubt that he could have easily finished the 2km swim in normal circumstances. I really think he already didnt feel good after finishing the first pond but still pushed himself to the limit only because he did not want to disappoint his teammates. He was a very brave person.

I will miss his easy-going demeanor. May you rest in peace Miguel.
